Ten Book Cover Trends I Like/Dislike

I totally judge books by their covers, but it's hard for me to notice trends unless they smack me in the face, such as the girl in gown craze.  But here are my top five likes and dislikes.

Clean and uncluttered.  A like the trend of just having a single image to focus on, be it a real object or a graphic.

Illustrated covers.  This trend is really becoming huge, and I'm sure I'll get sick of it.  Right now however, I am putting it on my like list.

An interesting font.  A script or something different will usually catch my eye, and I like that there have been so many covers that feature a non typical font.

Word Bubbles.  Something about a word bubble grabs me and makes me want to read the book.  It's a lot like the illustrated covers.

A Big Title.  I tend to like the trend of the title of the book filling out the entire cover.

Showing some back.  I tend to like covers that DON'T have people in them v. having them, but don't give me a back.  It's just rude.

The Big Face.  I hate this trend and it seems like it's been around forever.  I hate a bit giant face looking out from the cover.

No Information.  This refers to covers that tell you almost nothing about what the book is about. The covers can be very misleading about what the rest of the book is like.

The legs.  How many times have we seen this cover?  Too many for me. It's just so generic at this point.

The pretty dress.  We are moving away from this slowly but surely, but it still pops up way too often.  Now we are just seeing more back with the pretty dress.

  1. I definitely agree with most of these. I'm so glad we're moving away from the girl in the dress on the cover. It tells me nothing about the book at all, especially when the girls in those books almost never even wear dresses. And I think illustrated covers are my top favorite trend right now. Great list!

  2. Hahaha... I mentioned the same thing about the backs of girls in pretty dresses. It's just not engaging!

  3. Oh nice! I tend to like the pretty dresses myself, but I can see your point! Glad I'm not the only one who likes a good cartoony cover either!

    Here's my Tuesday Post

    Have a GREAT day!

  4. The big face puts me off. It was on the short list of my don'ts. I've seen some interesting word bubbles this year as well. That's a good one.

  5. Agreed! Agreed! Agreed! For me is the guy with the abs and tattoos wearing jeans with the girl in the back and her hands are in his pockets in the front. That is so played out! I'm also tired of seeing so much nudity on the cover, I know sex sells but plahese! Enough already. 50 Shades is considered erotica but the cover doesn't even have a human on it let alone nudity. I think that is excellent. Great post!
