Top Ten Books I'd Recommend To Non-YA Readers

Cinder (Lunar Chronicles #1) by Marissa Meyer

This book was so unique, and so much fun.  I highly recommend it to everyone, no matter their age.  

Divergent (Divergent #1) by Veronica Roth

I often forget the age of the main characters.  I think this book easily translates to an adult world.  I think it will make readers of all ages think.

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

I actually do recommend this book to everyone.  Particularly those, ahem, "my age".  It's such an awesome book, and a trip down memory lane.

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson

I think this should be read by everyone.  It's so powerful and so important.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter #1) by J.K. Rowling

I don't care what age you are, Harry Potter is so engrossing and so well written it should appeal to people of all ages.

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games #1) by Suzanne Collins

Like Divergent, I think people of all ages would enjoy this book. 

If I Stay (If I Stay #1) by Gayle Forman

This one is a bit of a stretch, but I really think it's so beautifully written and powerful that everyone can appreciate it.

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

Like some of the others, I think the message in this book and how beautifully it's written can transcend any age.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

I think this is already read by people that normally don't read YA.  At least it's been on the best seller list long enough to suggest that it has.  Either way, it's amazing and everyone should read it.

Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan

This is just a fun and awesome book that can appeal to anybody, particularly music lovers.  Actually most of their collaborative books could be substituted here.

Top Ten Books That You Wish Were Taught In Schools

This is a little hard for me, because more often than not, I think teaching books in schools tends to ruin an otherwise very good book.  There were very few books that I actually liked that I had to read in school, and even those books I liked, by time we finished analyzing the books, taking tests, and writing papers, I had negative feelings towards the books.  So in a hypothetical world, where teaching doesn't ruin a book, these are those that I think should be taught.

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

So many issues to discuss in this one.  Family dynamics, friendship, parental relationships, bullying, and cultural history.  Good stuff all around. 

If I Stay (If I Stay #1) by Gayle Forman

I would have a hard time justifying this one, but some of the topics include decisions, and life and death.

Life is But a Dream by Brian James

Teens dealing with mental illness.  Recognizing the need for medical intervention.  

Looking for Alaska by John Green

A great coming of age novel.  Think Catcher in the Rye, but more current.  It would actually work for the other TTT topic, and could easily be paired with Catcher.   I think there are some forward thinking schools that do teach this book, which is great.

My Life After Now by Jessica Verdi

This book can get a little preachy, and it is pretty predictable, but the topic is so important, and I just don't know of many books that cover it.

Not That Kind of Girl by Siobhan Vivian

I kind of love this book for it's different views on women and sexuality.  How do/should women act in order to have the most power?  So many interesting discussions can come from this book.

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson

Another book that I think may already be taught in some schools.  It deals with SUCH an important topic.  This is an issue that so many girls face and the guys in the classroom can bring in their perspective.  

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

Once again bullying is being dealt with her, as well as suicide.  Such a memorable take on both issues.  

The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen

Why?  Because no TTT would be comeplete without a Sarah Dessen book.  But really, I picked this one because it deals with some interesting issues including family issues as well as dealing with an unexpected loss and how to move on from it.

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games #1) by Suzanne Collins

This may be a bit of a stretch, but I think it deals with some interesting issues including, some morality issues.  As well as survival issues.  Plus it's a great book.

Top Ten Books Dealing With Tough Subjects

If I Stay (If I Stay #1) by Gayle Forman
I know I have talked about this before, but it is such a powerful book about death, and finding the will to live. So amazing and so powerful.





Looking for Alaska by John Green
Another book that deals with some hard subjects.  I won't go into what, but it is so amazing.  Honorable mention goes to The Fault In Our Stars.  I didn't want to put two John Green books on here, but it is equally as powerful.

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
I may have mentioned this book before, but it remains one of the most powerful books I have ever read.  It is just simply amazing.  I think it should be a must read for everyone.

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher
I read this years ago, and it's still with me.  A great look at suicide and what would cause someone to pick that option. 

Go Ask Alice by Beatrice Sparks
I know, I know. This is a work of fiction meant to be a autobiography.  Doesn't matter.  I read this in middle school and it kept me off of drugs my entire life.  Scared the crap out of me.

Life is But a Dream by Brian James
I thought a really well done look at mental illness.  I found it to be very engaging and real.

Identical by Ellen Hopkins
Really you can put any Ellen Hopkins book in here and it will be a book dealing with tough subjects.  I don't know if she's ever written a happy fun book.

Just Listen by Sarah Dessen
I don't know if any of my lists would be complete without a book by Sarah Dessen.  This one deals with a few hard topics, and it just so very good to book. All of her books deal with tough issues.  But they are so very good.

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
I debated a while putting this on the list. I don't normally think of it as a book dealing with tough issues, but really it does.  Between orphaned kids, abused & neglected kids, social issues, murder.  There are some things going on here.

Pushing the Limits (Pushing the Limits #1) by Katie McGarry
Yes, it's a love story, but that doesn't take away from the fact that the characters are dealing with some pretty tough issues.
