Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. I enjoyed this book. I look forward to the next book in the series.

My Life After Now. This book was a bit predictable, however, I thought it was a very important book.

Pivot Point is technically her debut book this year, but I read The Distance Between Us. I thought it was a promising debut for contemporary. I need to read Pivot Point though.

The Art of Wishing. I thought this was a really clever book. I look forward to the next one in the series.

Rainbow Rowell

I've made absolutely no secret about the fact that Eleanor & Park was my favorite book in 2013. I still have some books to read, but it will be hard to top it. Then I read Fangirl. Wow. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next in YA.

Top Authors New to Me:

Alexandra Bracken

I read The Darkest Minds a little late in the game. I thought it was awesome, and I really need to read the next one in the series. It's sitting on my shelf just waiting for me.

Cassandra Clare

I can't believe I'm admitting to never having read a Cassandra Clare book. I am so late to the game on this one. But I read two of them! I need to catch up on the series as a whole.

Gena Showalter

Another very prolific author that I never got around to reading until this year. I need to go back and read her past series, but I am kind of loving the White Rabbit Chronicles series.

Jessi Kirby

I never got around to reading In Honor or Moonglass, but I really enjoyed Golden, which I did get around to this year. I will read In Honor at some point in time.

Lili Peloquin

I read the first two book in her The Innocents series. It's good soapy fun. A true guilty pleasure.

A Friday Five (#14) The Distance Between Us by Kasie West

I haven't done one of these in FOREVER! I am so slacking, but this summer has been crazy.

On Fridays I'll feature one of my favorite books or a book I read in the last week and come up 5 words to describe it. View it as a super mini review. This week I'm featuring:

The Distance Between Us by Kasie West

This was one of my priority summer reading books because I love the idea of the book, and I love a good contemporary. Here are my words:

Witty
Flat
Innocuous
Quick
Unmemorable

Witty: The dialog throughout the entire book could be described as witty. I'm not sure if it was how sarcastic the MC was, which I totally appreciate, or if it was something else. But I enjoyed the dialog.

Flat: I had a hard time picking an adjective for this one. I settled on this one, because I think there could have been so much more done with this book. It tried to hit on a lot of things, but never gave any depth to any of them.

Innocuous: The book was just kind of there, it didn't offend, but it didn't inspire either.

Quick: This was in regards to the pacing for me. I flew through the book, which is always appreciated. I definitely enjoyed it enough to plow right through it.

Unmemorable: I actually read this a couple of weeks ago, and I struggled to remember things about the book. That is never a good sign, and it means I will most likely forget most of it by the end of the year. Now in the book's defense, I'm pregnant, so not a lot stays in my memory lately.

Bottom Line: I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it as much as I had hoped. It was a nice, quick, perfect summer read. It won't change lives, but it won't offend either.

Top Ten Words/Topics That Will Make You NOT pick up a book

Eeks, this is HARD. I pretty much will give anything a shot. I love my contemporaries, but if you look at what I read, it's got everything on it. I most important factor going into what I read, would be how others have viewed it. Rarely am I the first to review or rate a book. It's happened, but it's rare. I read what looks good to me, and then what everyone is saying is awesome. But here are things that I would be reluctant to read a book:

1. Males as the main character.

This is of course not always the case, but I am much slower to pick up a book where the main character is male. Maybe that makes me horrible, but I just tend not to like these books as much.

2. Short Stories

I do not like anthologies of short stories. Way too often they just leave me hanging. I like a full book to get into the characters and their stories. With short stories, I'm usually disappointing.

3. Sci-Fi/Space

I have read some awesome Sci-Fi books, but they are usually not my favorites. I'm usually really reluctant to pick one up.

4. Low Rated Books

I look at the overall rating of a book before I ever pick it up. If a lot of people don't like it, I doubt I will be the only one who will. If it has less than a 3.5 rating on good-reads, I will have to REALLY want to read it before I ever pick it up. My time is too valuable to waste on bad books.

5. Religious books

I am not very religious, and I usually don't like books that harp on God or other such religious things. I have read exactly one decent book that was considered "religious". It's just not worth my time to read these types of books because I won't like then and won't rate them fairly.

6. Two-Strike books

This refers to authors. I will give each author two maybe three books for me to enjoy the books or their writing. After that, I'm not going to read any more of their books. It's not fair to me, or to them. These could be perfectly lovely books, but I just didn't like the book or the writing.

7. Too Young

I usually like books where the MC is between 16-18. Younger than that can be very iffy for me. I usually don't like it, so I'll avoid those books.

8. Zombies

I have learned that Zombies are just not my favorite thing. Unless a book is getting fantastic buzz, I will not be quick to pick up a zombie book.

9. Fairies

Like Zombies, I am not very quick to pick up a book about fairies. I find them kind of annoying.

10. Fantasy

Once again, fantasy books are just not something I will pick up first. I enjoy many dystopian books, which can be considered fantasy, but as a whole, flat out fantasy novels are just not my thing.
