A Friday Five (#12) Nightshade (Nightshade #1) by Andrea Cremer

6/07/2013

Each Friday I'll feature one of my favorite books or a book I read in the last week and come up 5 words to describe it.  View it as a super mini review.  This week I'm featuring:

I may have mentioned before that I belong to a Goodreads group where one of the members picks a book for another member to read each month.  My May partner picked this book for me to read.  I don't normally read books about Warewolves, so this was a bit out of my comfort zone.  Here are my five words:
  1. Different
  2. Engrossing
  3. Confusing
  4. Strong
  5. Mysterious

Different:  I'm using this word because Nightshade was different from many of the books that I read.  While some of the story was formulaic, there were also things that made it stand out and be different from other books in the paranormal genre.

Engrossing:  Everything was engrossing about this book.  The characters, the plot, and the pace.  I was hooked right from the beginning and when it was over I wanted to jump into the next book.

Confusing:  This is primarily in reference to the beginning of the book. The author throws you right into the story, and I was lost for the first few chapters. After that, it wasn't confusing.

Strong:  This is in reference to the characters.  I felt they were all very strongly written.  I liked that Calla was such a strong female character as well.

Mysterious:  I am so excited to find out about the mystery in this book.  I have so many questions, and I can't wait to find out the answers.

  1. I have had Night Shade on my TBR forever! I too don't normally prefer a werewolves story but after reading Immortals after Dark series by Kresley Cole I wouldn't mind reading them if they are good.
I follow a group named 'Shut Up and Read' where a person partnered to you picks a book for you from your TBR list! Its a good way to bite the bullet of picking a book out of too many!

  2. I need to read this... I think it is hiding on my shelf somewhere! I have heard such good things plus I love werewolves. I am a little nervous about the third though, It seems to have gotten mixed reviews. I love strong characters though!

  4. I've heard such polarizing reviews of this book, so it's nice to see such a straightforward review like this. This book's been on my TBR for ages, but it's always been overlooked for some reason. Maybe it's time to give it a try now :)

  5. I LOVE this meme! I really, really do! I wish that more people would pick it up because it is awesome. And your 5 words about Nightshade have made me more curious about it than any of the reviews that I have read!

  6. I have seen the Nightshade series around a few times and have been curious about it. The series never quite made it on to my TBR list though. After reading your Five words descriptions, I think I might have to re-evaluate an give the series another look. Thanks

  8. I Love these kinds of books but don't get to read them often because I don't have an ereader and that seems to be the rage with all the newer authors and how they are publishing them. I guess I will have to live thru you guys!
