Top Ten Books I'd Give To Readers Who Have Never Read YA Contemporary

I almost feel like I'm cheating with this one, since I talk about these books quite a bit.  YA contemporary is by far my favorite, and it has been for a while.  Unless you detest contemporary, I really suggest jumping in with these.

This is contemporary, but is it also historical?  Gosh I hope not.  Either way, it's a great story, about some great characters.  Every character is so well written and it's such a compelling read.

A heartbreaking story, but also so wonderfully written.  Make sure you bring a tissue.  While there is romance, amongst other things, there is so much more to this story.

Another book to make sure you have your tissues for.  This is one of the most memorable books I've read.  Yes, it may not be considered completely contemporary, but I chose to believe that it is.  With the movie coming out this Friday, read it before you see it.

Just a wonderfully sweet love story, with some wonderful secondary characters.  I just adore this book.

This is one of those books that just stays with you.  I read it for the first time years ago, and I think of it often.  It's such a great discussion on women's sexuality, that I still contemplate.

I loved this book.  While other books have dealt with the idea of the path not taken, be what happens if you are a little late, or make a different decision, this one did it so well.  Another book that is so much more than a simple love story.

I am so excited to read her next book, because if it's half as amazing as this one, it may make my year.  Once again, the main topic, dealing with the death of a love one, goes into so much more depth.  It's so well written and so engaging, with a beautiful love story tossed in.

I don't know if it's possible for me to have a list, and not have a Sarah Dessen book on it.  I don't know if I can rest until everyone has read this book.  This one gets into the idea of love, and trusting someone enough to take the chance on love.

  1. Anna and the French Kiss is one of my favorite contemporary romances, seriously there awesome characters in that one. Sarah Dessen is one of my favorite authors, This Lullaby is one of her best(est) books. The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight surprised me because despite what a short time period it was about I loved it. And If I Stay, I can't wait for the movie, it seems like it'll be great.
    Amazing list.

  2. Great list. You're right. We do have very similar tastes. The only one I haven't read is Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson.

  3. Adore your choices so much! Really glad to see TSIE on your list, I'm always recommending that book. And you can never go wrong with a Dessen novel! :)

  4. Anna and the French Kiss and Eleanor and Park are two books I NEED to read. I almost feel ashamed that I haven't yet. I love this list, though. I have to read more contemporary YA.

  5. I haven't read a ton of YA. The only book on this list I've read is If I Stay... which I didn't like. I still haven't read any books by Sarah Dessen, though I think I probably should at some point! It feels like my YA reading education isn't complete without one of her books (which I see raved about regularly).

  6. Contemporary is a weird genre for me. Either I really love the book or a strongly dislike it. I don't know why this is, but it is what it is.
I agree completely agree with My Life Next Door. It is such a wonderful book! I love it so much!

  8. I read a lot more New Adult contemporary than YA, but I've been changing that! I actually just finished Anna and the French Kiss, which I really enjoyed. My Life Next Door and If I Stay are two high up on my TBR list. Must see If I Stay before the movie! Great list. :)
