Feature & Follow Friday (#14)

6/07/2013

The Feature & Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of Parajunkee’s View and Alison of Alison Can Read.

This week's Question:

Q: Have you broken up with a series? If so which one and why?

Interesting question!  My answer is both Yes and No.  Yes, there are two series that I broke up.  The first was when I was a teen I broke up with the Sweet Valley High books.  I got older, and there were just too many of them, plus all the spinoffs.  Out they went.  More recently (last 5 years), I broke up with the Vampire Diaries books.  The first 4 were fine, and I actually read them before the show came out, and then after the show was on the air, they came out with the 5th book.  It was SO bad that I couldn't bring myself to read any more.

There are a few series who I should have broken up with long ago, and yet I'm still reading them.  Examples are James Patterson's Witch and Wizard and The House of Night series.  I kind of hate both, and yet I'm still reading them.  I'm not sure why.

Then there are the others. These are generally trilogies, or shorter series, where I didn't really like the first book, so I'm in no hurry to read the others, or have no plans to.

That being said, I do find some satisfaction in finishing a series, particularly if it's lasted a long time.

  1. I quit House of Night too. I've read all Vampire Diaries books, but I have to say that the last books are not so great.. Old follower.

  2. Yeah, I was a little disappointed with Peculiar Children. It wasn't nearly as good as people said.

  3. I was pleased with Dearly Departed myself! I found it interesting, but am aware that we all have different tastes!

I loved the original 4 Vampire Diaries myself! I read them long before the show started as well. In fact I have the very cool, very retro 90s covers! When the series was going to be picked up again I admit to being intrigued. I read the first 3 or the first trilogy. There were things that I found odd and displeasing and confusing, but I kept going since I found myself in a trilogy and there was always just enough left unsaid that I wanted answered in the next book.

But then word got out that L.J. wasn't going to be writing them anymore. Read it on her blog even and I decided then that I wouldn't read them anymore. But it was also because there were just little nit picky things that kept bugging me about the series as well.

Mostly that they went from being in the 90s to present day. It was the thing with the cell phones that got me. Granted we had cell phones in the 90s but they were pretty big and not the nifty little devices these teens were whipping out when they didn't have them in the first four.

    Here's my Follow Friday

    Have a GREAT weekend!

  4. I have yet to finish the Vampire Diaries series but I at least want to read the first 4. I really love Sweet Valley High, but I know I probably won't get to read them all.

  5. I broke up with the Vampire Diaries too, because the newer novels are not L.J. Smith they fired her and hired a ghost writer. They also did that with the secret circle. I will not read them. I am a new follower via linky and gfc.
